This song is based on a legend about Billy the Kid. He had told his gang that there was an old trail that led to Mexico that could get them to safety. The name of the trail was actually the name of a lady of ill repute in Old Mexico and the trail was a lie, it did not exist and The Mexican Blackbird took many of them to their grave.
